Who Is A Good Candidate?

Good candidates for liposuction include patients that are at or near their ideal body weight but have fat pockets that are recalcitrant to dieting and exercise. For these patients, liposuction is an ideal means of contouring the body into a pleasing shape that enhances the patient’s natural curves without sacrificing a natural look.

Liposuction can remove small, localized concentrations of fat in specific areas such as the thighs and abdomen, but it is not an effective weight control treatment. In most cases, 10 pounds of fat or less will be removed.

Small incisions are made with a liposuction cannula for the performance of these procedures. Common areas treated include the abdomen, the flank or lower back region, back rolls, inner and outer thighs, pubic mound, arms, and neck regions.

Procedure

Most people are aware that liposuction involves the suction of fat through a tube. Fewer understand how much liposuction techniques have advanced since the surgery’s introduction. It is now possible for Dr. Mofid to make the liposuction process simple and seamless through an effective approach that targets problem areas while respecting the delicacy of the body’s tissues.

Dr. Mofid performs this procedure at one of several licensed surgery centers in La Jolla and elsewhere in San Diego. Liposuction surgery produces excellent results with minimal downtime; to learn more about Liposuction in San Diego, contact the plastic surgery office of Dr. Mark Mofid.

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed of all plastic surgery procedures. These surgeries typically take between 1 and 3 or more hours to perform depending on the volume and location of the fat pockets. These surgeries are typically performed in an operating room under either local anesthesia in conjunction with IV or oral sedation or under general anesthesia.

Wetting solutions made up of physiologic saline mixed with local anesthetics such as lidocaine and epinephrine allow this procedure to be performed under straight local anesthesia or with mild sedation. In cases where greater volumes of fat are more aggressively removed, these cases may be performed under general anesthesia.

A variety of techniques have been described including the use of laser assisted lipolysis, power assisted technology, and ultrasonic technology for the performance of liposuction. Depending on the areas to be treated as well as the underlying problem areas, one or more of these modalities may be used for the performance of liposuction procedures.

Recovery and Aftercare

Patients may realistically expect a nicer shape and curves associated with liposuction, though in the long term, liposuction procedures should not be viewed as a form of weight loss. Patients typically return to work after 3 or more days and wear a garment for up to 3 to 6 weeks.

Results

The full results of liposuction will be visible several months after the surgery as the body grows accustomed to its new contours. During this time, skin will tighten around the treated area and swelling will subside.

Liposuction scars are small and usually Dr. Mark Mofid is able to place them in areas where they will not be noticeable. These scars begin to fade just a few weeks after surgery. Before long, liposuction patients are able to enjoy the new confidence they have in their bodies.

When patients finally feel comfortable in their own skin, the difference is evident in everything they do.
