More Information about Breast Augmentation – By Dr. Mofid

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgical procedures in the United States.

There are a variety of options available to women today including the use of cohesive silicone gel round implants, form stable cohesive gel shaped implants, and round saline implants. Depending upon the underlying cosmetic issues that a patient would like to have addressed, several of these options may be available to provide the most aesthetically pleasing result.

The surgery itself is performed through small incisions within the nipple areola complex, an incision within the inframammary fold under the breast, or an incision within the axilla or the underarm using endoscopic guidance. The procedure may also be performed in conjunction with a breast lift or mastopexy procedure to lift both the breast tissue and the nipple areola complex to a more pleasing position. Typically those procedures entail more incisions entailing scars around the areola or within the vertical meridian from the nipple areola complex to the breast fold, or in certain cases, with a T-shaped or anchor scar from the nipple areola complex vertically down to the inframammary fold and transversely across the base of the breast.

Dr. Mofid has published extensively on breast augmentation surgery as well as revisionary breast surgery using biologic graft material. He has lectured internationally and has performed live surgery demonstrations internationally to teach these techniques.

There are many issues necessary to discuss during a patient consultation regarding the use of breast implants and these are most easily discussed during a patient consultation depending on a patient’s individual and unique situations.

Typically, patients return to work within several days to a week following breast augmentation surgery, may return to moderate exercise within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, and exercise without limitations within 4 to 6 weeks following breast augmentation surgery. It may take several weeks to several months for breast implants to settle into their ultimate position, and the final result may not be seen for up to 6 months to a year following surgery.

All breast augmentation surgery is typically performed on an outpatient surgical basis and may take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to perform depending on whether a lift or mastopexy procedure is performed at the same time.
